About me

My name is Suzan Beynon, self-taught textile artist from Amsterdam, specialising in contemporary embroidery. From a young age, I have been fascinated by design and creativity. Beautifully designed magazines, elegantly plated dishes, eclectically decorated houses, and unique shop windows always catch my eye. As a child, I was already busy with needle and thread to decorate cushions. After high school, I wanted to follow a creative path, but the step to an art academy felt too big. I completed a window dressing course, took various desktop publishing classes, and eventually found my way into magazine and book publishing.

In 2021, I started embroidering the images that came to mind. This inspired me so much that at the beginning of 2023, I decided to make a significant change. It was time to say goodbye to my permanent job and start a freelance career. Now, I can perfectly combine my passion for books and textiles.

When I start with a new work, I don’t have a preconceived plan. My intuition and creative spirit guide me, resulting in organic artworks. Abstraction meets graphic precision, as I play with shapes, lines and colours to create a modern aesthetic. I find inspiration everywhere: in nature, interior design and the travels I have made. Perception is important to me. I can be struck by something in nature, the shape of an object or a particular colour.

Each piece is carefully handmade and completely unique. Pure embroidery. I work with wool, cotton and embroidery thread and sometimes incorporate other materials into my creations such as buttons, shells and beads.

With my work, I try to honour traditional embroidery while giving it a contemporary touch with my modern artistic vision.
